The Toronto Market

The TSX composite was down a marginal -5.21 points or -0.02% to close the market session at 25,405.14.

                                                                                                                                            

The Market Spread: Only five of the ten major sectors gained today. Technology, up 1.27%, is the leading sector for the third consecutive session. Healthcare was up 0.31%; Basic Materials was up 0.30%; Durable Consumer Goods & Services was up 0.24% and Financials gained 0.21%. Telecommunications Services was down -0.88%; Energy was down -1.02% and Discretionary Consumer Goods & Services was down -1.39%. The Energy sector has been consistently down at the TSX recently.

Industry Groups:  Consumer Electronics was up today a whopping 37.25%. Textiles & Leather Goods 10.53%; Beverages – Non Alcoholic was up 6.93%; Aluminum was up 4.55%; Electrical Components & Equipment was up 1.73%.

Today’s Statistics: Today, the gaining issues (Advancers) edged out the declined issues (Decliners). There was roughly one Advancer for every Decliner or more precisely, if required, a ratio of 1.05-to-1.0. In real numbers, there were 967 Advancers to 919 Decliners while 166 stocks remained Unchanged.

Today, the total volume of shares traded at the TSX was 625,384,441, a negligible difference when compared to the volume of 626,158,495 shares traded yesterday.

There were 288 new 52-Week Highs and 6 new 52-Week Lows. By comparison, there were 364 new 52-Week Highs and 13 new 52-Week Lows yesterday.

The US Markets

Today, the Dow Jones Index advanced 123.74 points or 0.28% to close at 44,860.31 – a record closing value. The S&P 500 index gained 34.26 points or 0.57%, to close at 6,021.63 – a record closing value. The Nasdaq Composite moved up 120.74 points or 0.63%, to close at 19,175.58.

The Market Spread: It would appear that safety was paramount on the minds of investors, going by the top two performing sectors, at the market session today and only six of the eleven major sectors gained. Utilities was on top with 1.32% gain while Telecommunications Services was up 0.66%. Durable Consumer Goods & Services was up 0.54%; Technology was up 0.52%; Healthcare was up 0.48% and ; Industrials was up 0.82%; Financials was up 0.77%; Basic Materials was up 0.60% and Discretionary Consumer Goods & Services was up 0.32%. Financials was down -0.10%; Energy was down -0.45% and Basic Materials was down -0.89%.

Industry Groups:  Retail – catalog & Internet Order was up 3.08%; Utilities – Electric was up 1.77%; Food Distribution & Convenience Stores was up 1.59% while Environment Services was up 1.28% and Tobacco was up 1.25%.

Today’s Market Statistics:  At the NYSE, the declined issues (Decliners) outnumbered the gaining issues (Advancers). There were three Decliners for every two Advancers or a precise ratio of 1.57-to-1.0. In actual numbers, there were 2,469 Decliners to 1,573 Advancers with 282 Unchanged.  There was a reversal today after three consecutive bullish sessions.

Today, there were 358 new 52-Week Highs and 52 new 52-Week Lows. By comparison, yesterday, there were 836 new 52-Week Highs and 40 new 52-Week Lows.

The total volume of stocks traded at the NYSE on Friday was 963,289,249 which is 49% less than the volume of 1,910,465,442 traded yesterday.

On the NASDAQ, the Decliners outnumbered the Advancers. Roughly, for every three Decliners there were two Advancers or a precise ratio of 1.48-to-1.0. In actual numbers, 2,583 Decliners to 1,742 Advancers with 244 Unchanged.

Today, there were 189 new 52-Week Highs but 99 new 52-Week Lows – fewer new 52-Week Highs compared to the Lows. By comparison, yesterday there were 560 new 52-Week Highs but 78 new 52-Week Lows.

Today, the total volume of shares traded at the NASDAQ was 6,671,502,894, 19% less when compared to the volume of 8,207,534,061 shares traded yesterday.

Oil Price:    Oil price remained steady with investors’ focus on the ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel in the Middle East. Oil price was at $68.91 as at the time of this post.

10 –year Treasury Yield:  The US 10-year Treasury yield was slightly up at 4.302% from 4.267% at yesterday’s close. The five-year yield was also slightly up from yesterday to close at 4.193%.
