The Toronto Market
The TSX composite was up 33.83 points or 0.14% to close the market at 25,010.77. The market opened deep in the negative territory today but recovered later in the day to close above yesterday’s close. The culprit was the threat of possible war escalation – geopolitical issues relating to Russia- Ukraine war.
The Market Spread: Only four of the ten major sectors gained at the market session today. Today just like yesterday, Basic Materials, up 1.60%, lead the sectors. Utilities gained 0.75%; Financials was up 0.25% and Telecommunications Services was up 0.07% to round up the list of gaining sectors. Technology was down -0.86%; Healthcare was down -0.93% and Durable Consumer Goods & Services was down -1.35% today.
Industry Groups: Highways & Railtracks was up 4.22%; Insurance – Multiline was up 3.48%; Electrical Components & Equipment was up 2.67% and Office Equipment was up 2.43%. Precious Metals & Minerals gained 2.10%. Aluminum, down -4.35%, was the worst performing industry today.
Today’s Statistics: Today, the declined issues (Decliners) edged out the gaining issues (Advancers). There was one Decliner for every Advancer (evenly matched) or a ratio of 1.01-to-1.0. In real numbers, there were 952 Decliners and 939 Advancers while 163 stocks remained Unchanged.
Today, the total volume of shares traded at the TSX was 434,199,876, almost the same when compared to the volume of 436,003,339 shares traded yesterday.
Today, there were 95 new 52-Week Highs and 26 new 52-Week Lows. By comparison, there were 107 new 52-Week Highs and 20 new 52-Week Lows yesterday.

The US Markets
The market performance today, just like yesterday was mixed and the Dow index, just like yesterday was the only index to decline. The Dow Jones Index declined -120.66 points or -0.28% to close at 43,268.94. The S&P 500 index gained 23.36 points or 0.40%, to close at 5,916.98. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 195.66 points or 1.04%, to close the session at 18,987.47.
The Market Spread: Seven of the major sectors advanced at the market session today. Technology, up 1.19%, was the top performer. Utilities was up 0.91%; Discretionary Consumer Goods & Services was up 0.40%; Durable Consumer Goods & Services was up 0.39%; Industrials was up today 0.22% and Basic Materials was up 0.18%. Financials was down -0.16% while Energy and Telecommunications Services brought up the rear declining -0.47% and -0.67% respectively. There were no major gains and no major declines. Most of the gains and declines were within +1.00 and -1.00 range – the markets today were quite orderly.
Industry Groups: Marine Port Services was up 5.78%; Aluminum was up 2.83%; Semiconductors was up 2.67%; Food Distribution & Convenience Stores gained 2.33% and Precious Metals & Minerals was up 2.32%. Today, the market was really dominated by Technology and Retail operations.
Today’s Market Statistics: At the NYSE, the gaining issues (Advancers) outnumbered the declined issues (Decliners). There were eleven Advancers for every ten Decliners or a precise ratio of 1.11-to-1.0. In actual numbers, there were 2,175 Advancers to 1,950 Decliners with 282 Unchanged.
Today, there were 172 new 52-Week Highs and 97 new 52-Week Lows. By comparison, yesterday there were 159 new 52-Week Highs and 88 new 52-Week Lows.
The total volume of stocks traded at the NYSE today was 1,075,163,364 or 28% more, when compared to the total volume of 839,680,982 stocks traded yesterday.
On the NASDAQ, the Advancers outnumbered the Decliners. Roughly, for every thirteen Advancers there were ten Decliners or a precise ratio of 1.33-to-1.0. In actual numbers, 2,459 Advancers to 1,841 Decliners with 268 Unchanged.
Today, there were 84 new 52-Week Highs but 230 new 52-Week Lows. By comparison, yesterday there were 90 new 52-Week Highs but 271 new 52-Week Lows.
The total volume of stocks traded at the NASDAQ today was 8,719,242,357, or 7% more when compared to the total volume of 8,153,967,573 shares traded yesterday.
Oil Price: Oil price was at $69.39 a barrel, largely unchanged as at the time (11pm EST) of this post .
10 –year Treasury Yield: The US 10-year Treasury yield closed at 4.379%, down from Monday’s close of 4.416%. The 10-year yield was at 4.404% as at the time (11pm EST) of this post. The five-year yield dropped to 4.248%.
