The Toronto Market

The TSX composite index was up 110.05 points or 0.44% to close the market session at 25,281.63. The TSX index has been up six consecutive sessions.

                                                                                                                         

The Market Breadth:   Technology, up 1.59%, was the top sector today at the TSX. Discretionary Consumer Goods & Services was up 1.20%; Financials gained 0.71%;  Industrials gained 0.48%; both Basic Materials and Durable Consumer Goods & Services were each up 0.23%; and Utilities was up a mere 0.09%. Healthcare, Telecommunications Services and Energy were up -0.39%, -0.59% and -0.67% respectively.

Industry Groups:  Insurance – Multiline was up 3.405; Advanced Medical Equipment gained 3.05%; Marine Transportation gained 2.95%; Beverages – Non-Alcoholic was up 2.79%; and Retail – Discount stores was up 2.76%.

Today’s Statistics: Today, the gaining issues (Advancers) outnumbered the declined issues (Decliners). There were nine Advancers for every five Decliners or a more exact ratio of 1.8-to-1.0. In real numbers, there were 1,260 Advancers to 703 Decliners while 162 stocks remained Unchanged.

Today, there were 153 new 52-Week Highs and 8 new 52-Week Lows. By comparison, there were 132 new 52-Week Highs and 11 new 52-Week Lows on Friday.

The total volume of shares traded today at the TSX was 197,300,412, or about 45% less when compared to the volume of 358,977,141 shares traded on Friday.

The US Markets

The Dow Jones Index vaulted 537.98 points or 1.24% to close at 44,025.81. The S&P 500 index gained 52.58 points or 0.88% to close at 6,049.24. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 126.58 points or 0.64%, to close at 19,756.78. Dow Jones was the leader of three indexes, continuing a trend started last week.

The Market Breadth: Healthcare, up 1.99%, was the top sector today, at what was quite a positive market session. Industrials gained 1.88%; Utilities was up 1.87%; and Basic Materials gained 1.30%.  Financials was up 1.23%; Discretionary Consumer Goods & Services was up 1.18%; Technology was up 0.77%; Durable Consumer Goods & Services was up 0.62%; and Telecommunications Services was up 0.49%. Energy, down -0.08%, was the only sector to end the session with a lower value than at market start today.

Industry Groups:   Engineering Construction, up 4.06%, was the top performing industry group today. Airlines industry continues to perform well and was up 3.46%. United Airlines stock(UAL) was a top performer in 2024. Paper Products was up 3.37%; Aerospace & Defense was up 2.97%; and Biotechnology was up 2.93%.

Today’s Market Statistics:  At the NYSE, the gaining issues (Advancers) totally outnumbered the declined issues (Decliners). There were nine Advancers for every two Decliners or an exact ratio of 4.5-to-1.0. In actual numbers, there were 3,471 Advancers to 764 Decliners with 298 Unchanged.

Today, there were 264 new 52-Week Highs and 39 new 52-Week Lows. By comparison, on Friday, there were 166 new 52-Week Highs and 22 new 52-Week Lows. The US markets were closed yesterday for the  Martin Luther King Holiday.

The total volume of stocks traded at the NYSE today was 1,010,717,723 or 17% (one fifth) less when compared to the volume of 1,215,741,258 stocks traded on Friday.

On the NASDAQ, the Advancers outnumbered the Decliners. There were nine Advancers for every four Decliners or an exact ratio of 2.25-to-1.0. In actual numbers, 3,087 Advancers to 1,374 Decliners with 193 Unchanged.

Friday, there were 166 new 52-Week Highs and 94 new 52-Week Lows.  By comparison, on Friday there were 105 new 52-Week Highs and 79 new 52-Week Lows.

The total volume of shares traded at the NASDAQ today was 8,239,827,814, or about the same when compared to the volume of 8,278,463,416 shares traded on Friday.
