The Toronto Market

The TSX was down -60.11 points or -0.28% to close today’s market session at 21,788.48. The volume of shares traded was down compared to yesterday.

                                                                                                                    

The Technology sector, up 0.89% led the sectors today. Only three of the major sectors ended the session with gains. The other two sectors with gains were Durable Consumer Goods & Services, up 0.52% and Industrials, up 0.05%. Financials declined by a marginal -0.06%; Energy declined -0.17%; Utilities was down -0.46%, while Healthcare was down 1.10% and Basic Materials declined -1.16%.

In the industry groups, Consumer Electronics was up a portfolio friendly 10.71%; Coal was up 5.69%; Electrical Components & Equipment was up 3.89%; Construction Materials industry was up 2.16% and Heavy Electrical Equipment was up 1.49%

Today’s Statistics: Today, the declined issues (Decliners) outnumbered the gaining issues (Advancers). The ratio of Decliners to Advancers was 1.5-to-1.0 or in simple terms, roughly for every three Decliners there were two Advancers. In real numbers, 862 Decliners to 577 Advancers with 103 Unchanged. The total volume of shares traded for gaining stocks was 105,788,271 or 34.3%, the total volume for declined stocks was 188,825,901 or 61.2% and 13,680,807 or 4.4% for “Unchanged”.

Today, there were 19 new 52-Week Highs and 17 new 52-Week Lows. Yesterday, there were 45 new 52-Week Highs and 22 new 52-Week Lows.

The total volume of shares traded at the TSX today was 308,294,979 compared to yesterday’s 364,304,729. The volume today was 15% lower than the volume yesterday and 18% lower than the average of the ten most recent market sessions.

The US Markets

The Dow Industrial Average reversed and declined -299.05 points or -0.76% to close the market session at 39,112.16. The S&P 500 advanced 21.43 points, or 0.39%, to close at 5,469.30. The Nasdaq Composite climbed 220.84 points or 1.26%, to close at 17,717.65. Volume was down on both the NASDAQ and the NYSE today compared to yesterday.

Technology, up 1.64% and thanks to NVIDIA and other AI technology companies, led the sectors at the US markets today. The Energy sector closed even – no gain and no decline; Healthcare and Discretionary Consumer Goods & Services declined a marginal 0.06% each; Telecommunications Services sector declined -0.28%; Financials declined -0.60%; Industrials declined -0.77%, while Utilities declined -0.79% and Basic Materials declined -1.07%.

In the industry groups, Semiconductors was up 3.75%; Advertising / Marketing gained 2.48% while Semiconductor Equipment & Testing gained 2.26%; Auto & Truck Manufacturers gained 1.88% and Retail – Specialty was up 1.47%.

Today’s Market Statistics: Today, the declined issues (Decliners) outnumbered the gaining issues (Advancers) on the NYSE. The ratio of Decliners to Advancers was 1.61-to-1.0 or in practical terms, approximately for every eight Decliners there were five Advancers. In real numbers, 2,461 Decliners to 1,522 Advancers with 314 Unchanged. The total volume of shares traded for gaining stocks was 280,831,138 or 27.3%; the total volume for declined stocks was 734,662,621 or 71.3% and 14,817,579 or 1.4% for “Unchanged”.

Today, there were 122 new 52-Week Highs and 87 new 52-Week Lows. Yesterday, there were 179 new 52-Week Highs and 48 new 52-Week Lows.

The rally is certainly not dead but the markets have been closing mixed.

The total volume of stocks traded at the NYSE today was 1,030,311,338 compared to yesterday’s 1,032,080,617. Today’s volume was about 8% higher than the average of the ten most recent market sessions.

On the NASDAQ, the Decliners prevailed over the Advancers by a ratio of 1.54-to-1 or roughly for every three Decliners there were two Advancers. In real numbers, there were 2,589 Decliners to 1,682 Advancers with 302 Unchanged.  The total volume of volume-gaining stocks was 2,632,592,973 or 51.9%; the total volume of declined-volume stocks was 2,362,248,010 or 46.6% and 78,304,188 or 1.5% for “Unchanged”.

Today, there were 72 new 52-Week Highs and 195 new 52-Week Lows. Tuesday, there were 73 new 52-Week Highs and 139 new 52-Week Lows.

The total volume of stocks traded at the NASDAQ today was 5,073,145,171 compared to yesterday’s 5,719,736,944, a 12% decrease and 4% lower than the average of the last ten market sessions.

10 –year Treasury Yield:    The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 4.27%.
