The Toronto Market (June 18th)
The TSX advanced 23.42 points or 0.11% to close today’s market session at 21,611.30. The volume of shares traded was down a good bit at the TSX today.
Less than half of the major sectors ended today’s session with gains. Basic Materials was up 0.88%, while Energy was up 0.79%, Financials were up 0.27% and Discretionary Consumer Goods & Services (read as Retail if you prefer) was up 0.15%. Healthcare was down -0.18%; Utilities were down -0.34%; Industrials were down -0.07% and Technology was down-1.67%.
In the industry groups, Home Furnishing was up 6.59% today, while Beverages – Brewers gained 6.09%; Textiles & Leather Goods gained 3.57%; Casinos & gaming was up 3.10% and Electrical Components & Equipment gained 2.94%.
Today’s Statistics: Today, the gaining issues (Advancers) outnumbered the declined issues (Decliners). The ratio of Advancers to Decliners was 2.09-to-1.0 or in simple terms, roughly for every two Advancers there was one Decliner. In real numbers, 970 Advancers to 464 Decliners with 131 Unchanged. The total volume of shares traded for gaining stocks was 196,786,348 or 65.1%, the total volume for declined stocks was 112,335,898 or 35.1% and 10,700,407 or 3.3% for “Unchanged”.
Today, there were 174 new 52-Week Highs and 13 new 52-Week Lows. Yesterday, there were 149 new 52-Week Highs and 23 new 52-Week Lows. On Friday, there were 127 new 52-Week Highs and 24 new 52-Week Lows. We present three session’s data to make it easier for our readers to follow the trend. The best way to utilize the 52-High or Low data is to keep an eye on the ratio of the 52- Week Highs to 52-Week Low and the trend of the 52-Week Low figure. When the 52-Week Low starts to increase, there is the likelihood that the market may start to get bearish especially if that is happening with increase in the number of “Unchanged”.
The total volume of shares traded at the TSX today was 319,822,653 compared to yesterday’s 385,726,277. The volume today was 17% lower than the volume yesterday, Monday.
The US Markets
Today, Tuesday June 18, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 56.76 points or 0.15% to close the market session at 38,834.86. The S&P 500 was up 13.80 points, or 0.25%, to close at 5,487.03. The Nasdaq Composite was up 5.21 points or 0.03%, to close at 17,862.23. Volume was down on the Nasdaq but up at the NYSE.
The US markets had a broad-based positive session. Eight of the major sectors ended today’s market session with gains. Energy was the top performer with 0.63% gain. Financials gained 0.51%; Telecommunications Services was up 0.44%. Industrials were up 0.39%, while Technology ended the session with 0.31% gain; Utilities gained 0.30% and Basic Materials was up 0.19%. Healthcare declined -0.34% while Discretionary Consumer Goods & Services sector was down -0.33%.
In the industry groups, Computer Hardware was up 2.47%; Diversified Trading & Distributing was up 2.17%; Semiconductors gained 2.08%; Retail – Drugs gained 2.01% and Airport Services was up 1.65%. People are certainly travelling more, possibly as part of subconscious effort to push those business killing but necessary COVID restrictions in to further distant memory. As an investor though, that industry is worth looking into for opportunities as travel demands persist.
Today’s Market Statistics: Today, the gaining issues (Advancers) outnumbered the declined issues (Decliners) on the NYSE. The ratio of Advancers to Decliners was 1.79-to-1.0 or in practical terms, approximately for every nine Advancers there were five Decliners. In real numbers, 2,554 Advancers to 1,429 Decliners with 332 Unchanged. The total volume of shares traded for gaining stocks was 557,336,999 or 57.3%; the total volume for declined stocks was 382,851,944 or 39.4% and 32,306,472 or 3.3% for “Unchanged”.
Today, Tuesday, there were 259 new 52-Week Highs and 93 new 52-Week Lows. Yesterday, there were 250 new 52-Week Highs and 126 new 52-Week Lows. Friday, there were 122 new 52-Week Highs and 127 new 52-Week Lows.
The rally is back in full swing. It is time to be fully engaged if you chose to.
The total volume of stocks traded at the NYSE today was 972,495,415 compared to yesterday’s 866,694,404, a twelve percent increase.
On the NASDAQ, the Decliners prevailed over the Advancers by a ratio of 1.27-to-1 or roughly for every thirteen Decliners there were ten Advancers. In real numbers, there were 2,397 Decliners to 1,897 Advancers with 274 Unchanged. The total volume of volume-gaining stocks was 3,282,349,750 or 54.9%; the total volume of declined-volume stocks was 2,627,139,412 or 43.9% and 70,636,086 or 1.2% for “Unchanged”.
Today, there were 146 new 52-Week Highs and 218 new 52-Week Lows. Yesterday, there were 142 new 52-Week Highs and 218 new 52-Week Lows. On Friday, there were 66 new 52-Week Highs and 210 new 52-Week Lows.
The total volume of stocks traded at the NASDAQ today was 5,980,125,248 compared to yesterday’s 6,287,018,405, a five per cent decrease.
10 –year Treasury Yield: The 10-year Treasury yield fell 6 basis points to 4.22%.
Oil Price: Crude oil prices rose 1.5% to $81.57 a barrel, up 4% in two days.
Stocks In The News/Stocks To Watch
The US Markets
Nvidia was down slightly yesterday but was up 3.5% today. It would appear that smaller investors are trying to own a piece of the stock now that ten-for-one split has brought the stock’s price within their reach. On the charts NVDA stocks looks extended. It would appear that there is quite some demand for NVDA stock, possibly some pent up demand by smaller investors is now being met and that is may be keeping the stock’s price up and preventing a pullback. We do not predict the market. We analyze and follow the market. The market will always do what it choses to do.
Broadcom Inc. (AVGO) was down 1.44% today. The company has also announced 10-for-1 stock split scheduled for mid-July effective shareholders as of today, June 18th.
