The Toronto Market

Friday, the TSX declined a relatively mild -36.37 points or -0.16% to close today’s market session at 22,690.39. The TSX has declined the last three consecutive market sessions.

                                                                                                                                            

Today, three of the major TSX sectors: Durable Consumer Goods & Services up 1.44, Technology, up 0.28% and Healthcare, up 0.14% ended the session with gains. Industrials sector was down -0.11%; Energy declined -0.21%; Basic Materials declined -0.24%; Utilities declined -0.26%; Financials declined -0.27%; Telecommunications Services was down  -0.42% and Cyclical Consumer Goods & Services (Read as Retail or as a good pointer to Retail)  was down -0.56%.

In the Industry groups, Computer Hardware vaulted 17.29%; Air Freight & Courier Services was up 3.06%; Food Distribution & Convenience Stores gained 1.96% while Pharmaceuticals – Diversified gained 1.43% and Paper Products gained 1.17%. Quantum eMotion Corp (TSX: QNC) and Route1 Inc. (TSX:ROI) are two members of the Computer Hardware group. Both are penny stocks.

Today’s Statistics: Today, the declined issues (Decliners) totally outnumbered the gaining issues (Advancers). The ratio of Decliners to Advancers was 2.0-to-1.0 or in simple terms, roughly for every two Decliners there was one Advancer – the market was negative today. In real numbers, 886 Decliners to 447 Advancers with 123 Unchanged. The total volume of shares traded for gaining stocks was 98,113,745 or 42.0%, the total volume for declined stocks was 126,190,297 or 54.0% and 9,531,873 or 4.1% for “Unchanged”.

Today, there were 68 new 52-Week Highs and 13 new 52-Week Lows. Yesterday, there were 153 new 52-Week Highs and 11 new 52-Week Lows. The market trend remains bullish.

The total volume of shares traded at the TSX today was 233,835,915 compared to 331,245,419 yesterday. The volume on Friday was 30% lower than the volume at Thursday’s market session and 22% lower than the average of the ten most recent market sessions. Volume was not there at the TSX on Friday. That of course raises questions about how reliable Friday’s data is for the market’s direction.

The earnings season is here. the volume was low on Friday possibly because some investors are sitting on the sidelines waiting for the earning’s report to start flowing in.

The US Markets

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down -533.06 points or -1.29% to close the market session at 40,665.02. The S&P 500 was down -43.68 points, or -0.78%, to close at 5,544.59. The Nasdaq Composite declined -125.70 points or -0.70%, to close at 17,996.93.

Today the market continued the negative mood which persisted yesterday. Only two of the major sectors ended the session with a gain. Healthcare and Utilities gained 0.43% and 0.20% respectively. Durable Consumer Goods & Services was down -0.28%; Telecommunications Services was down -0.38%; Financials declined -0.53%; Cyclical Consumer Goods & Services was down -0.78%; Basic Materials declined -0.82%; Industrials was down -0.86% while Energy declined -0.92% and Technology, the worst performing sector today, declined -0.99%.

For the week, Industrials sector gained 4.59%; Financials did well gaining 4.20%; Healthcare was up 3.16%; Durable Consumer Goods & Services was down 2.8%; while Basic Materials gained 2.61% and Telecommunications Services gained 1.96%. Technology, the only sector to decline for the week, was down -4.57%.

In the Industry groups, Fishing & Farming gained 7.81%; Advanced Medical Equipment followed with a gain of just 1.35%; Paper Products was up 1.02% while Restaurants Group and Leisure and Recreation were each up 0.79%.

Today’s Market Statistics: Today, the declined issues (Decliners) outnumbered the gaining issues (Advancers) on the NYSE. The ratio of Decliners to Advancers was 2.11-to-1.0 or in practical terms, approximately for every two Decliners there was one Advancer. In real numbers, 2,636 Decliners to 1,249 Advancers with 314 Unchanged. The total volume of shares traded for gaining stocks was 529,626,081 or 42.7%; the total volume for declined stocks was 686,971,561 or 55.4% and 23,580,844 or 1.9% for “Unchanged”.

Today, there were 153 new 52-Week Highs and 41 new 52-Week Lows. Yesterday, there were 413 new 52-Week Highs and 35 new 52-Week Lows.

The total volume of stocks traded at the NYSE on Friday was 1,240,178,486 compared to yesterday’s 1,003,877,107. Friday’s volume was 23.5% higher than the volume on Thursday and 22% higher than the average of the ten most recent market sessions.

On the NASDAQ, the Decliners prevailed over the Advancers by a ratio of 2.0 to-1 or roughly for every two Decliners there was one Advancer. In real numbers, 2,775 Decliners to 1,416 Advancers with 320 Unchanged. This is bearish but far less bearish than the last couple of sessions. The total volume of volume-gaining stocks was 2,015,197,753 or 39.0%; the total volume of declined-volume stocks was 3,108,075,904 or 60.2% and 40,188,742 or 0.8% for “Unchanged”.

Today, there were 59 new 52-Week Highs and 108 new 52-Week Lows. Yesterday, there were 224 new 52-Week Highs and 69 new 52-Week Lows. The NASDAQ was very much extended by the end of last week but the current rotation to small caps is slowly correcting the situation.

The total volume of stocks traded at the NASDAQ on Friday was 5,163,462,399 compared to Thursday’s 6,123,037,086. Friday’s volume was 16% lower than the volume on Thursday. Friday’s volume was 9% higher than the average of the last ten market sessions.
