The Toronto Market As At Friday, February 9
The TSX composite index was up 89.96 points or 0.43% to close today’s market session at 21,009.60. Volume of shares traded was relatively low today.
Seven of the TSX major index’s sectors ended today’s market sessions with gains. Technology was the clear top performer with 2% gain. Financials gained 0.60%; Utilities gained 0.42%; Telecommunications & Services gained 0.32%; Healthcare gained 0.09% and Energy gained a paltry 0.02%; Durable Consumer Goods & Services, Basic Materials and Discretionary Consumer Goods & Services declined -0.10%, -0.63% and -1.44% respectively.
Entertainment Production was the top performing industry with a rather muscular 8.74% gain. Oil & Gas Drilling was up 8.73%; Banks gained 8.36%; Advertising / Marketing was up 8.15% and Personal products gained 8.14% during the market session.
For the week, Healthcare was the top performing sector with a 5.87% gain; Industrials gained 2.46%; Durable Consumer Goods & Services gained 0.05% while Financials was down -1.35%; Basic Materials was down -1.52% and Technology was down -1.5%.
Today’s Statistics: The gaining issues (advancers) outnumbered declined issues (decliners) today. The ratio advancers to decliners was 1.86-to-1.0 or for every nine advancers there were five decliners. In real numbers, 932 decliners to 501 advancers with 135 Unchanged. The total volume of shares traded for gaining stocks was 125,063,916 or 51.2%; the total volume for declined stocks was 105,593,380 or 46.3% and 12,658,882 or 5.2% for “Unchanged”.
There were 201 new 52-Week Highs and 31 new 52-Week Lows.
The total volume of stocks traded at the TSX today was 244,316,178 compared with 290,474,792 yesterday, a 16% decrease, almost a full reversal of the gain in volume at the previous market session. Today’s volume of 244,316,178 was lower than the average of the ten most recent market sessions.

The US Markets
The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined -54.65 points, or -0.14%, to close at 38,671.69. The S&P 500 was up 28.70 points, or 0.57%, to close at 5,026.61. The Nasdaq Composite gained 196.66 points or 1.25%, to close at 15,990.66. The S&P 500 appears ready to keep climbing even as it has recently crossed the 5,000 points level.
Eight of the market’s major sectors ended the day with gains. Technology was the top perfoming sector with1.27% gain; Durable Consumer Goods & Services was up 0.75%; Indutrials was up 0.56%; Financials was up 0.55%; Healthcare and Basic Materials were up 0.18% and 0.09% respectively. Energy was down -0.81%.
Semiconductor Equipment & Testing, up 4.21%, was the top perfoming industry; Retail – Catalog & Internet Order was up 2.70%; Heavy Electrical Equipment was up 2.05%; Semiconductors was up1.97% and Computer Hardware gained 1.80%
For the week Healthcare was the top performing sector with 2.15% gain; Durable Consumer Goods & Services was up 1.48%; Technology was up 1.21% and Durable Consumer Goods & Services was up 0.67%; Energy declined -2.07%; Telecommunications Services declined -1.84%; Financials sector declined -1.51% and Utilities declined -1.49%.
Today’s Market Statistics: Today, the gaining issues (advancers) outnumbered the declined issues (decliners) on the NYSE by a ratio of 2.01-to-1 or for every two advancers there was one decliner. In real numbers, there were 2,647 advancers to 1,312 decliners and 281 “Unchanged”. The total volume of volume-gaining stocks was 519,113,782 or 54.9%; the total volume of declined-volume stocks was 412,437,301 or 43.6%; and 14,624,578 or 1.5% “Unchanged”.
There were 456 new 52-Week Highs and 64 new 52-Week Lows compared to 358 new 52-Week Highs and 69 new 52-Week Lows on Thursday. The market rally continues with really bullish market performance again today.

The market outlook remains trade with caution. The market continues to send conflicting signals. The risk of a market pullback is real and quite strong as a good number stocks, especially some AI related manufacturers, have seen quite strong gains during recent sessions.
