The Toronto Market, Friday
Today, the TSX composite was up 104.48 points or 0.41% to close the market session at 25,848.00. TSX continues to advance higher into record territory. Just for a little useful diversion, the TSX closed at 16,854.92 on December 5, 2019 – five years ago. Is the TSX going reach 9,000 points or higher on Thursday? We’ll see.
Today’s Statistics: Today, the gaining issues (Advancers) outnumbered the declined issues (Decliners). There were three Advancers for every Decliner or a ratio of 3.0-to-1.0. In real numbers, there were 1,430 Advancers to 468 Decliners while 133 stocks remained Unchanged.
Friday, the total volume of shares traded at the TSX was 276,495,428, 16% less when compared to the volume of 329,951,493 shares traded on Thursday.
Friday, there were 291 new 52-Week Highs and 10 new 52-Week Lows. By comparison, there were 226 new 52-Week Highs and 7 new 52-Week Lows on Thursday.
The US Markets, Friday
Friday was the day after Thanksgiving so by tradition, the market closes at 1pm – a half session day. Volume was down significantly, not a surprise since it was a half day session but all the indexes were up at market close. The Dow Jones Index advanced 188.59 points or 0.42% to close at 44,910.65. The S&P 500 index gained 33.64 points or 0.56%, to close at 6,032.38. The Nasdaq Composite was up 157.69 points or 0.83%, to close at 19,218.17. All three indexes recovered all of Wednesday losses and are back in their respective record territories.
Today’s Market Statistics: At the NYSE, the gaining issues (Advancers) outnumbered the declined issues (Decliners). There were five Advancers for every two Decliners or a precise ratio of 2.47-to-1.0. In actual numbers, there were 2,731 Advancers to 1,106 Decliners with 291 Unchanged.
On Friday, there were 386 new 52-Week Highs and 63 new 52-Week Lows. By comparison, on Wednesday, there were 406 new 52-Week Highs and 53 new 52-Week Lows.
The total volume of stocks traded at the NYSE on Friday was 790,747,299 which is 10% less than the volume of 879,899,021 traded on Wednesday.
On the NASDAQ, the Advancers outnumbered the Decliners. For every nine Advancers there were five Decliners or a precise ratio of 1.88-to-1.0. In actual numbers, 2,801 Advancers to 1,487 Decliners with 286 Unchanged.
On Friday, there were 214 new 52-Week Highs but 49 new 52-Week Lows – quite bullish. By comparison, on Wednesday there were 206 new 52-Week Highs but 85 new 52-Week Lows. Market was closed on Thursday for Thanksgiving.
The total volume of shares traded at the NASDAQ on Friday was 4,147,385,514, 29% less when compared to the volume of 5,793,997,176 shares traded on Wednesday.
Oil Price: U.S. crude oil dipped to $68.58 a barrel.
10 –year Treasury Yield: The 10-year Treasury yield shed five basis points to just 4.19% at market close.
